Hey everyone – figured I’d do my first blog on the table repair project that John Sandy and myself have undertaken. We are completely replacing two tabletops and reskinning two other older tables. We purchased two 4×8 pressure treated ground contact plywood sheets, four 6ft by 8ft rolls of trafficMaster artificial grass rugs, a gallon of exterior rated paint and some miscellaneous galvanized screws and hardware. The total for this project was just over $300. The temperature was around 70 degrees at lunch time and the winds were light.
Pre-repair condition of field table
On 10 Apr 2025 John Sandy and I went out to mount two sets of uprights. Weather was 70 and the winds were light.
The finished table looks quite nice. Keep reading below as I detail the process.
Here's what the particle board table looked like after removing the old artificial grass.
You can see what's left of the visqueen sheeting after a few years of UV - just bits and pieces.
Here we have one old table ready for a new tabletop and another table stripped of old grass and ready for paint
I painted the two new tops in my garage and had them ready for today. After we removed the old turf from two other tables I painted them and we proceeded to apply turf to the two new tabletops. We purchased four 6ft by 8ft rolls of trafficMaster artificial grass rugs at Home Depot. The new tabletops are 4ft by 8ft pressure treated ground contact rated plywood - also purchased at Home Depot.
And here's what they look like now. We still plan on replacing the uprights - we just didn't have them ready for installation yet.
Prepping some new uprights - painting in progress...tedious!
Paint and wait, paint and wait, watch the paint dry... Jeez, will we ever get there?
For the extra curious, here's the paint I'm using. Is that the new Tekno SCT 410 2.0 in the background? 🙂
After scribing in all the cut lines and corners it's time to drill. This allows the band saw blade to make the crosscut.
Cutting out some more uprights along with the first batch of new uprights complete and ready to install
Another table full of uprights during the painting process.
Two coats of primer and two coats of acrylic urethane paint - that should help them last for several seasons!
Hey boys and girls! We're back out at the field on the beautiful spring day of 14 Apr. We've mid 50s for temps and a mild breeze from the southwest. John Sandy and Jerry Knight are installing some galvanized pipe for a set of uprights. These two guys can make any 15 minute job turn into 2 hours as each attempts to outdo the shear number of stories each can tell to the other. I finished two tables and then came back and heard John say to Jerry "did I ever tell you about that flight I had in the B-25...," I casually walked on by.
Can you spot the most important tool in this photo?
